Conservative MP goes on brazen rant about tampons in men's washroom

Canadians currently await the CPC to call on Michelle Ferreri to resign for making this outrageously stupid video.

We’re starting to see the Conservative Party of Canada become more anti-LGBTQ+, more anti-freedom of expression, more anti-Canadian, and generally just ridiculous and out of touch. We’ve covered this and more countless times, earlier this month we discussed another MP demanding a French MP answer a question in English. So because Michelle Ferreri just cannot help herself, she is stirring up controversy, embarrassing her party (and committing a misdemeanour) in the process.

The Conservative MP for Peterborough took to X (formerly Twitter) with a now-deleted video of her doing a tour of the HoC, and (insert time slot here) in which she ends up going into the men's washroom and using it as an opportunity to complain that the HoC was supplying the men's room with tampons.

Let's go over the problems with this video. Firstly, the implications behind this video are disgusting. She went into the men's bathroom and complained about menstrual hygiene products being provided. The subtext is crystal. It is a subtle but very existent transphobic dog whistle. This isn't new either, this is something the CPC has been doing a lot lately. Pierre Poilievre went to one of his rallies that he didn’t let everyone see, he proceeded to endorse transphobic, pro-child abuse conspiracy theories. It's pretty simple, open and shut here. Additionally, by taking a video in the washroom like this, Ferreri directly committed a crime as it is considered a misdemeanour to film in the washroom as she did and although a common occurrence a lot of Canadians do in non malicious ways, as an elected official Ferreri should be held to a higher standard.

Menstrual products are in the men's room for trans men who work in the HoC, their presence isn't intrusive. Anyone with a functioning brain cell is probably curious as to how the fuck is even remotely worth complaining about in the first place. Spoiler alert: it isn’t.

The rest of her argument does not work under any scrutiny. She argues that government workers can afford their menstrual products and she ends up removing these menstrual products and claims to be about to donate them. Ferreri throughout her 3 year career as an MP has not once advocated making menstrual hygiene products free or even lowering the cost at the store, has voted against free school lunches or $10 a day daycare, and universal dental care for seniors. The real problem with this is a great example of right-wing privilege. Imagine how she’d react if the prime minister walked into the women's room and pulled a stunt like this; going on an unhinged delusional rant about something completely ridiculous and trivial. It would be a near career-ending scandal. But because it's a Conservative MP, more people are going to overlook it and forget about it.
